Hopping Aboard the Bojo Bandwagon

My new column is about the sensational 2009 vintage in Beaujolais. My one word of advice: Buy!

Have you been drinking the 09s? Are you as enthusiastic about the vintage as I am?

I agree: it is a sensational vintage. As I pointed out in my article, a few chronic contrarians are griping about the ripeness; there is definitely some puppy fat on many of the wines, but the acidity is there. I didn’t mention the 09 Dupeuble in my article, but I also enjoyed that wine, too. And I think you are absolutely right: this is a vintage that can appeal both to the Monkton hedonist crowd and those of us who are perennial Beaujolais fans.

This vintage lives up to the hype. My wife and I have been mowing it down since our first sip of the ’09 Dupeuble. Lapierre Morgon, Brun Terres Dorees Lancien, and Thevenet Morgon were all uniformly excellent, and on the advice of others, I’m even letting a Beaujolais sleep for a while (Foillard Cote du Py). All the acid and fun smells I love about the grape, but with enough fruit to keep the Monkton hedonist crowd smiling. I can’t believe how little I’m paying for so much pleasure.
