La Paulée de San Francisco

2012 February 13
by Mike

If you are in the Bay Area or looking for an excuse to go there, La Paulée de San Francisco is taking place February 22-25. This is the West Coast version of La Paulée de New York, about which I’ve gushed here and there. A celebration of the greatest wine region on the planet—that would be Burgundy—La Paulée is a rollicking good time, and I highly recommend it.

But if you went out and bought the wines you wouldn’t get to see all the posturing at the dinners.

Or maybe I am just upset because Asimov is speaking, rather than you or Allen Meadows!

Mike, I have to tell you, I understand the one-stop shopping, food and camaraderie of an event like this, but, depending upon the quality of the DRCs that you might get to try, you could do a lot better taking the $4,000 here and $2,900 there and buying your own, all of it top-drawer grand cru, not just a fraction. Also, the American Express exclusive events are, to my mind, somewhat crass and evincing a snobbery that the American Express card no longer commands. (I say this as an Amex cardholder who can avail myself of such foolishness and does not.) That said, I am not trying to talk you out of your love of the event, nor, of course, Burgundy itself. And I suppose a good time can be had without attending the big-ticket events. Just sayin’…
