My Vanity Fair Article About Rudy Kurniawan
2012 June 12
My apologies for the light (read: nonexistent) posting of late. It has been a busy last few months, not least because I was working on a piece for Vanity Fair magazine about the Rudy Kurniawan saga. The article is now online if you’d like to have a look, and if a discussion happens to break out here, I promise I will participate! Thanks for your patience.

hi sir
I found the wine at sea, the ship’s london. please see photos
Ha, Maureen Downey rejected Kurniawan’s consignment way back in 2002 at Zachys. What took so long FEDs? http://www.wine-searcher.com/m/2012/05/grand-jury-indicts-kurniawan
Congratulations, Mike! I loved your article. The burning question is: Who will play Rudy?
Dan a guillotine for Robespierre Klappy? I’m sure that his severed and beautifully prepared head would be the subject of a Hedonist Gazette article of merit, paired with 3 mags of 07 Cdp.
But Bill,
Robespierre incarnate? You? Really? He was summarily eliminated by a dose of his own medicine. I haven’t seen anyone come close to that sort of turning of the table on you; nor any sign that it is yet to come. And Shakespierre is of course Shakespeare. But did you have to mimic my dysluxia?
I’m flattered, Dan. Taught Shakespierre and I am Robespierre reincarnate…
Don’t worry about neglecting this blog. The Vanity Fair story was worth it. Good work.
Mike,
I’ve seen an announcement of a movie rights option taken on your article. Are you brushing up your playwrite talents? Mr Klapp can help- he taught Shakespierre.
Good to have you back with us!
Mike,
Thanks for doing the work, it is a well-written article. Good bit of homework to come up with a dozen or so points not known about an issue which has already generated lots of writing.
Mike, I read your article last night and thought it was so well written. I saw on the VF comments someone saying that this article was late. I don’t think it is. Aside from the New York mag article no-one has been able to summarize the full complexities of this story yet for those readers that like wine but aren’t necessarily wine geeks. I like how you tied in tidbit about the Sofitel’s suite.
I understand, Bill; snooze you lose, as they say. At any rate, if you get evicted by HoseMaster, you are always welcome back here.
Thanks, Jack; much appreciated. At this point, I have no plans to write a follow-up article, but I am certainly going to be keeping a close watch on this story.
Appreciate the note, Frank; glad you liked the article, and yes, it was great that Wine Diarist had a small role in this story.
Good article and I’m glad the website played a role.
Well written Article Mike. You could teach the ol Hosemaster a thing or three.
Any future articles lined up? I am interested in whether Rudy had co-conspiritors as Ponsot suggests.
Mike, we are really sorry, but we have all moved on. Roughly half of your former readership is now on Wine Spectator’s board, the other half on Steve Heimoff’s blog. Jack Bulkin and I were not welcome either place, so we frequent the HoseMaster’s blog exclusively…
