What Wine With That Wiener?

2011 July 4
by Mike

Timed to coincide with the Fourth of July, my latest Slate column is about a hot dog and wine tasting that I did with professional competitive eater Sean “Flash” Gordon. We had a lot of fun, and our tasting yielded some interesting results. Sean is participating in the annual Nathan’s Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating contest, which is being broadcast live at noon, ET today on ESPN. Only in America, folks.

Francois, the magnum would indeed be a great match! I accept!

Since a hot dog is not exactly the best definition of finesse in food matter, I will choose a contrast wine in order to ease a good and safe digestion.
So, naturally we have to look first to a white wine and since we still have to consider some softness in the selected cru, my first choice will be a GrĂ¼ner Veltliner.
If my guest is our Host or Wilfred van Gorp, naturally I will choose a magnum of Emmerich Knoll Smaragd : a safe decision, no ?

Thank goodness! I was afraid from the title that you were doing a tasting with the private-Tweeting pol!
